Is that really true? I thought it was nowhere near the same quality

M4a uses a more efficient algorithm to encode the file, which is why the file size is smaller - not because of quality. The real reason most people hate m4a's is not all programs support playback as these files are more complex, whereas pretty much everything supports mp3's.

Positron is right though, they are not identical - but you'll need an insane audio setup and supersonic hearing to notice the difference of any m4a above 192kbps. If you ever get that picky though you might as well get the lossless wav/flac :P
