def 100% garage. no doubt. garage tends to have that 2 step early 90's type sound and groove. but i'm no expert. learning tho :D

not trying to be a dick, just pointing out that garage came 1st, its been around since the death of disco, started in the NY club 'paradise garage' (hence the name 'garage'), its kinda what disco became in the early 80's. 2 step didnt make its way into the scene til the late 90's/early 2000's, and pretty much started the whole 'step' phenomenon. uk garage came in the early 90's and has a very different feel. uk garage you can hear on this site to get an idea, while american garage (aka ny house) has more of a vocal/pop/housey feel to it. perfect example is any early MAW (masters at work aka lil louie vega & kenny dope) stuff.

while your right, this mj cole track is def garage, but it does not have that 4x4 kick pattern (except for a small spot at the end). this track is very much 2 step, it has that swingy almost breakbeat kinda drumline.

again, not trying to be a dick, just putting this up cuz it seems a few ppl are still having some probs trying to distinguish between styles. (beer)

well its not THE original garage track, was just a good example. i think the album with that tune on it came out in the early 2000's, but garage originated back in the late early 80's.

check out larry levan's 'live at the paradise garage', its a 2 disc live mix done WAY BACK in the day, if you want OG american garage music, then that is the go to album. its very disco influenced but its during the time that garage was being started, plus it was mixed by the legend himself, one of the originators of garage music. he also built the sound system at paradise garage which after it closed is now the same system used at ministry of sound.

I think the 2-step feel comes from the fact that there is absolutely no percussive hit on exactly on the 3rd beat, just stuff dancing around it which causes an induced shuffle in your mind. But what do I know haha.
