Automation with third party vst's (synth's, effects, etc) in fl can be a pain in the ass but I've pretty much gotten the hang of it. Side chaining was challenging for me, and for some reason fl wont let you save multiple effects in your mixer and allow you to open them later, you can only open one vst at a time and individually load your preset on them (hmm).

One thing I still can't figure out is how to do a note slide in piano roll with a third party vst. Say for instance Im using massive and want to create a bass drop from E to an octave lower... there is no way to notate that within the daw piano roll (as far as I know. Im only able modulate the lfo on the osc freq inside of massive and "guess".

Anyone know of a better way? Thanks for starting this thread!

Automating thing party vsts is easy. Just turn the knob you want to modulate, go to Tools > Last Tweaked > Create automation clip. Side chaining is a bitch, you're right. I use Nicky Romero Kickstart for quick sidechaining of set patterns (4x4 etc). For more advanced controls I use this method;

Takes some time figuring it out, and you need to redo this for every sound, but it works. I never use the routing and sidechaining bits in the mixer, that has fucked up my track more than once. FL Studio does allow you to save multiple effects in the mixer. As seen here; http://gyazo.com/013ca50748ab99008f925c3d1fb6e414 Just click the white arrow above a mixer track and save and load the states. Works perfect for me

For that last part you need to check the settings of your VST and set the bend mode to Monophon. For Massive you can find that here; http://gyazo.com/380491b47340eb11d9701063cebf4dd5 For each VST its different, for example Sylenth1 is here; http://gyazo.com/155766d324f237e254c075ea078cb731 Just google the VST youre using to find where it is

Your notes should be as following; http://gyazo.com/ca4d0bcd54c6bc40beaff1ea74ae35ba NOTE: not set to slide. The lowest note should start where you want the change to happen, so it could also be right after it, or even later.

Biggups Bulker! Really appreciate all the tips! Im thinking of switching to cubase tho lol. It seems to address all the problems that fl has and do them right. I just really still like the ease and workflow of fl!

i've learned automation in Fl is actually pretty easy.

In addition to what bulker said about automating third party VSTs, you can automate just about any knob in any VST you want. Go up to the top of your browser and click current project > generators > and whatever synth you want. Click on the synth and the entire list of features that can be automated will drop down in a list.

alternatively, click the drop down arrow at the top of any VST (effects as well) and click browse parameters and it will take you here. then you can automate any feature you want.

as far as sidechaining goes there are a lot of quick tutorials on it. Use the fruity peak controller on a kick drum (or whatever will be affecting the volume modulation). uncheck the "mute" button on the bottom right. Now go to the mixer for the synth you are sidechaining. right click the volume slider and hit link to controller > link to fruity peak controller (lfo I think, whatever the top feature is). click the drop down arrow next to "mapping formula", choose inverted. in the formula line where it says "input" type "0.7*(1-input)" press enter.

as far as adjusting how much of the volume gets modulated, play with the horizontal line at the top of the peak controller (it controls the peak (lol) )

I couldn't find the videos I watched when I learned those, but hopefully that will help someone

Correct, its the video I posted, by far the best method (perfect)

side-chaining with the FL Limiter is the easiest and most convenient way ive found yet. it takes a few seconds to set up and is ridiculously easy to use. the method with the peak controller is a pain in the ass and does not work nearly as clearly and error-free as the fl limiter.

Automating thing party vsts is easy. Just turn the knob you want to modulate, go to Tools > Last Tweaked > Create automation clip. .

its easier if you just click this button right here http://postimg.org/image/htl6xo8pn/

it automatically saves last tweaked so all you need to do is activate it,push the knob you want to automate and go over the sign right click select automation clip.
