So I come across this thought often when looking for garage, and this seems like a good example that might get me some clarity of understanding the difference..

To me this just sounds to me like bass house, what is it that lands it as garage?

I guess it would really depend on what you consider "bass house" because I'd consider this pretty full on garage. Traditionally as I understand it garage is characterized by more chopped up, soulful vocals with irregular drums and skipping hi-hat. After a couple years when it started to have more crossover with jungle, the heavier, grimy basslines started to become more prevalent.

Maybe there's a mod or someone who knows a little more about the technical differences that could try to explain?

@philthaay I guess from what I had formulated over the years it seemed to me that where house has the pattern of

1.1 - kick / 1.3 - snare / 2.1 - kick / 2.3 -snare / 3.1 - kick / 3.3 - snare / 4.1 - kick / 4.3 -snare

garage always seemed to have that second and fourth kick set on an off beat more similar to breaks instead of right on the downbeat like house.

Again, that's just what I had kinda figured out for myself over time, but it seems over the last year or two in particular I am seeing a lot more things being called garage that have that house style pattern.

You mean a prime example of 4x4

tempo is faster than "bassline house", signature garage square wobble, 4 to the floor with a syncopated swung hi hats.

textbook.
