Multiple Sub Synth Clipping

ScareWare

Recommended Posts

So I know many people have problems with they're subs clipping and the usual attack/release settings along with some portamento quickly resolve that issue. Now for my subs I like to use just a sine wave (yes I know very common) with absolutely nothing on it except LP. The problem is I have about 5 or 6 "sub synths" making the one sub line. Is there a way to prevent clipping between these without the use of a limiter, or do I simply have to resort to bouncing each indivdual synth to audio and chopping them together so there is no overlap? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated! (ok)

You usually dont really want overlapping sub layers because you'll get phasing issues and usually just results in a pretty muddy mix.

If you're just trying to avoid clipping on the master from only sub-bass it sounds like you just need to work on your mixdown.

You can also try using some volume automation or fades to get the parts to 'blend' together from section to section.

hehehe if i knew how to not do it, i wouldnt be posting. its just a result of the release settings, if they are zero then there will be clicking but if they are not zero then the synths overlap. but lately ive just been making it audio and cutting the tails off

then work on the sound itself and not on other knobs. get your sound clean - and if you say you use only sine waves, then try out another plugin and get a single sine wave (or multiple for that matter) in that plugin and try it out. im usually working with albino 3 and clipping never occured on sub basses.

on the other hand, i advise you to never use single sine waves as sub basslines. it might sound powerful when playing back, but sine waves are not/hardly effected by any filters/effects you put on them. create a sub bassline with other waveforms and simply cut out everything above the wanted frequencies and see how your sub reacts to effects better.

plus cut everything under 40hz off to give your speakers space to "breathe", takes some work of the speakers with frequencies that hardly have any effect and that leaves you with more power for the "not so sub-bassy"-frequencies, making them more powerful in a minute.

@under92 - i will give that a shot right now, i used to use square waves but i have never tried putting effects on my sub except for when i first started

@bulker - dont you get clipping if theres no release?

also, i have had luck with putting just enough release for it not to clip; and just enough attack so that the release of synth one combined with the attack of synth 2 never crosses the desired threshold. however this means i do not get full volume for sixteenth notes, which can obviously be fixed by it not completely following what the mid range does. but i really like for there to be volume and pitch movements in those frequencies

am i right thinking that you actually use different sub basses to keep them on the same volume level? because thats what compression is all about... you normally just have one sub bassline and cut off the sub in every other bass-sound you put in to avoid overlapping - and for that matter never use more than one sub bass in a song.

We'll I'm not sure what you use, but I just have a massive with my sub bass, and let it play the notes. I'm pretty sure it justs end the note and uses the release of the previous to start the new note, so no overlapping (I hope you know what I mean).
