Aikido is the biggest joke in all of martial arts. Completely ineffective against anyone who has ever taken an beginner boxing, kicking boxing, muay thai class.

The video you linked is an even bigger joke, demostrations are easy when you let someone throw you around. That guy is like a 100 years old and if anyone wanted to actually punch him in the face there is little to nothing he could do, even with 70 years of "martial arts" training.

@DoubleDeeYou are not wrong my friend. Most of what you see is a farce. a mere showcase where students fly around like leaves. That's why I said I'll upload video if I get approval. Aikido Is a bad selfdefence to learn, in the way that it takes years to get good at it. It's all technique and nothing else. Anybody who hasn't trained over +8 years, will get their asses whooped. But I garantee you It works once you understand it. Hey I'm just saying, I'm a skinny tall boi, and it took me 12 years to understand the actual art. You are right and wrong at the same time. but thank you for saying. I feel like people don't say this often enough. Aikido doesnt work without dedication! So I aggree!

PS Have you ever fought an Aikido master?
PPS I know boxing, ninjutsu, muy thai, judo, kendo, and karate.

Just for the sake of explanation. Would you dare to face off with me? You think Aikido is a joke right? Do you think you could win from a skinny boi with 12+ yrs of training?

Yes, exactly, it's a joke of a martial art and maybe one of the most ineffective in all of combat sports. It, self-admittedly, took you 8+ years to become even slightly competant. You could have spent that 8 years doing a martial art such as muay thai, kick boxing/boxing, bjj or a combination of all of them, which are proven and extremely effective in a real combat situation. It wouldn't have taken you 8 years. The chances of you catching a punch in the chaos of a fight and doing one of your fancy throws is close to 0. Serious pressure, strength and distance makes your martial art close to pointless. We know what works and what doesn't thanks to MMA. Aikido joins the long list of traditional martial arts that are a waste of time. The biggest fallacy of Aikido, and many traditional martial arts,  is thinking an 80 year old man would stand a chance against a moderatly in shape male athlete who is half of his age.

I mean, It's great you are staying active and have discipline but lets not kid ourselves in thinking you could apply it to a competitive MMA match or a street fight. You would get double legged, mounted and choked out or someone would run at you swinging haymakers and your 12 years of experience doing demonstrations wouldn't help you one bit. As the old saying goes, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

@ DoubleDee I sort of agree, no use in aikido if you aren't commited. Also I did win the matches against mma ^^. Did I get lucky? I dunno. But yh there more effective styles out there for sure. Just don't forget Aikido is a lifestyle too, including buddhisme and such. But yeah I get your point. It's not exactly "efficient".

Also, the reason why we follow those old dudes is because they keep secrets haha. They only spill the beans after years :p

I basically don't aggree on your effectiveness argument. You know mma right? Those locks came from judo and aikido mostly, chokes incl. So don't tell me they dpon't work ^^. And it's not as fancy as you think too ^^. Only the demonstrations ;)

i enjoy mma and anything martial arts related. gets my blood pumping and was always interested in getting into muay thai/kickboxing. i mostly learned brazilian jiujitsu for 2-3 years but not under a dojo but with a bunch of friends and reading eddie bravo books lol. did go to a mma gym for little less than a year learning mostly defensive bjj techniques and some basic kick boxing. my kicking is terrible tho. if i had a choice i would go back into bjj and get into boxing (mostly just incase for defending myself in street fights). although i highly respect bjj, in real street fights it is not optimal and often hinders your defensive capabilities. typically people get thrown into concrete/asphalt ground so that is bad news for your back and head. and there is no such thing as an honorable fight. you can potentially get gang rushed by multiple people. arm bars and leg locks arent gonna save you in those scenarios. especially when 5 ppl gang up on you with weapons. using kicks as a weapon is probably my biggest weakness. great for creating distance and mixing up offensive combos but you can lose balance in the heat of the moment. Judo is highly effective. I approve! all it takes it one solid throw on a hard floor and its good night
