the bpm counters are wrong half of the time on cdj's anyways, it's just a nice indicator for the rough amount of bpm the track has.

And what i tried with my traktor and controller which also helps if you don't want to rely on your eyes that much is; covering the waveform and some other things on your pc/laptop screen.. That way you'll actually have to listen

wether or not they are wrong according to what the track was produced at, I really dont know, but if you import all your tunes through Reckord Box they are 100% stable and will always stay on tempo.

covering the wave form and Bpm is a great example how to train yourself. it is alot of fun (approve)

If your starting off and are genuinely wanting to not 'cheat', the only way forward is to go pure cd/vinyl (probably not the best way to go nowadays though). This way it will force you to learn all the basic's, and learn them all properly with no shortcuts. Plenty of beginner tutorials on youtube too.

The only way to go really is with a pair of pioneers (although ive seen some newbies swear by some numark cdjs). 2000 are not worth getting as a beginner, but check ebay and you can get some 400's/or 800s/1000's (the mk2 ones are best bang for your buck) second hand. The good thing about doing this is that although it may initially cost a fair amount to buy the stuff, if you decide its not for you, you can easily sell them on again without loosing too much money from doing so! Also may wanna look at grabbing a cheap but feature packed mixer like djm400 and then your pretty much set!

As pioneer is industry standard stuff too, once you've used one piece of their equipment you can near enough use every piece! Obviously this way is a more expensive route as opposed to a cheap little midi set-up, if you ever wanna go beyond recreation and be take seriously (mainly by other DJ's, and these are the ones you wanna be impressing anyway) you gotta learn how to handle the CDJ's! Nothing worse than playing a set and having some noob dj with a VDJ setup unplugging half the wires on the back of the mixer when your trying to start mixing! If you go the VDJ route you will just have to learn CD still if you choose to in the future anyway, so its a no brainer imo :)

DJ software is a great way for a beginner to learn how to mix. That's not to say you will learn all the aspects of DJing from it though. I play mostly on CD joggers, sometimes vinyl, but I've also used a variety of controllers as well, and i can say the ones which work accurately, and function like CD joggers, are as much as many CD joggers. The Numark Mixtrack is ok. but to get the bpm to match exactly using the pitch faders is impossible. It'll always be off by a few hundredths of a bpm so you will be constantly using the jog wheel too keep the tracks in time. But its the cheapest solution to learn to beatmatch and mix, ie DJing. BUT....If you have the money to spare, i highly recommend getting 2 CDJs and a two channel 3-band EQ mixer. Pioneer makes a quality product, and if you can score some good refurb units for a good price get 'em, but they're high end so they're pretty pricey. So someone like numark would offer midrange products. NDX200's are very basic entry level joggers. they don't even give you a bpm read-out. NDX400's are great, adding touch response and basic scratch functioning, USB support and hot cues. The NDX800's are their top end CD player, adding on board tempo synced effects. The prices are $120, $200, and $400 respectively, per unit. In my opinion for a first time DJ I would get a Numark Mixdeck. Its essentially 2 NDX800s and a Numark IM1 mixer, just in one piece. But it has the added bonus of functioning as a controller for Serato, Traktor, VDJ, Mixvibes and PCDJ natively, BUT.... it doesn't have a sync button so it will force you to learn to beatmatch even if you decide to use software, but it wouldn't have that inaccurate pitch fader issue that their controllers do.

Thank you guys for all the feed back, I might go with what your suggesting ^^ Lunashift.

I think it would be easier to buy it all together. I have no experience what so ever. And sorry if I sound like a complete noob asking these questions, but is the numark cdj ?

Does it require cd's ?

Go grab a couple of cdj 100's off of eBay.

You dont need to spend a truck load of money in case you dont like it, or cant get on it with.

I use 100's, got em for $40 a piece off the bay. they're great beginner decks and I highly recommend them to someone that is just starting up, but I'm trying to upgrade to some 350's sometime here soon.
